Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Gregory Obi, has ruled out serving as anyone’s running mate in the 2027 general elections. During a recent X Spaces conversation, Obi dismissed swirling rumours of potential alliances, particularly with Atiku Abubakar, declaring his firm intention to contest the presidency directly.
Obi’s bold statement came amid heightened speculation about opposition mergers to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection bid. He emphasised that his extensive business experience and governance record in Anambra State position him uniquely to lead Nigeria, not to play second fiddle.
“I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice President. I know how to turn Nigeria around,” Obi stated.
The conversation, which trended widely on social media, also addressed rumors of Obi defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). While not confirming an immediate switch, Obi hinted at ongoing consultations, with reports of an ADC convention and his potential involvement fueling further debate.
Obi’s “Obidient” movement, which mobilised millions of youths in 2023, appears energised by his presidential ambitions. Supporters view his stance as a commitment to the “third force” narrative, refusing to dilute their momentum through compromise alliances.
Critics within the opposition, however, argue that Obi’s solo run could fragment votes, benefiting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku’s camp has remained silent, but sources suggest that the camp is exploring other partners amid his own 2027 preparations.
Obi’s remarks align with his recent public appearances, where he has called for national unity and renewal while confirming his 2027 bid. A reported declaration rally in Enugu on December 31 could mark a pivotal moment in his campaign launch.
The timing of Obi’s Twitter Spaces intervention coincides with broader political realignments, including Kano Governor Abba Yusuf’s rumored defection from NNPP to APC.
