A as Human rights activist and national chairman of African Action Congress (AAC) Omoyele Sowore, was on Thursday morning arrested by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force.
Sowore who was at different times presidential candidate of the AAC was picked up shortly after leaving the at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to a video footage seen by The Verge, the arrest was ordered by the Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Sahara Reporters publisher who was scheduled to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite over what he described as a “bogus and farcical” charge of alleged forgery of a police wireless message, filed under the instruction of the “illegal Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun”, was informed at the court that the judge would not be sitting.
A police officer was seen in the footage approaching Sowore, informing him that he was under arrest on the orders of the FCT Commissioner of Police.
The activist was eventually ushered into the police van.
The arrest was confirmed in a post on X by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who accused the police and President Bola Tinubu’s administration of undermining Nigeria’s judicial system.
Inihebe wrote: “The arrest of Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments ago is preposterous.
“The police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system.He should be freed immediately. Stop the shenanigans.”
